3. Vedi Napoli e poi muori

Hier zijn we weer in het genoegen van elkaars gezelschap. De post van vandaag gaan we wijden aan de stereotiepe beelden die aan Napels worden toegeschreven: een vuile, gevaarlijke, lelijke, en oude stad. Klopt dat of hebben de media alles opgeblazen?

 

Napels is doorheen de geschiedenis altijd een van de belangrijkste en mooiste steden van Italië geweest. Hoewel de media ons de laatste jaren de indruk heeft gegeven dat de stad  de meeste van zijn pluimen heeft verloren, is dat in werkelijkheid helemaal niet het geval. 

Dé grote deuk in het Napolitaanse imago kwam er in 2007 toen de vuilniscrisis uitbrak in de stad. Maandenlang werd het afval niet opgehaald, omdat de vuilnismannen geen plaats meer vonden om het afval kwijt te raken. Die crisis is uiteindelijk voor het grootste deel opgelost, maar in sommige buurten van de stad (lees: vooral de buitenwijken), vind je hier en daar toch nog steeds bergen afval op straat. Eén van de grootste oorzaken van dat probleem, is de infiltratie van de lokale maffia, de Camorra, in de afvalverwerkingsdiensten. 

Ondanks de vele pogingen van de autoriteiten, zijn ze er tot nu toe nog niet in geslaagd om de Camorra te verzwakken. Natuurlijk heb je van die problematiek als student of als toerist helemaal geen last. Bovendien heb je weinig of niets te zoeken in die buitenbuurten, ik ben er gewoon toevallig (lees: ik was de weg kwijt) voorbijgelopen.  Het enige afval dat mij enigszins stoort, zijn de sigarettenpeuken die je overal, maar dan ook o-ve-ral aantreft. 

Een ander beeld dat de media Napels heeft toegeschreven, is dat het een van de gevaarlijkste steden op aarde is. Ook dat probleem wordt momenteel aangepakt door de autoriteiten. In de belangrijkste delen van de stad zie je heel wat agenten patrouilleren, wat je onmiddellijk een veiliger gevoel geeft. Je gaat mij natuurlijk niet horen zeggen dat er helemaal geen criminaliteit aanwezig is, maar volgens mij is Napels net zoals elke andere grote stad, een stad met veilige en wat minder veilige buurten. 

Het enige echte gevaar dat je elke dag moet trotseren, is het Italiaanse verkeer. Overal en op welk moment dan ook, kan er wel een vespa of een auto opduiken. Het verkeer in Napels is een echte jungle, waarin het ieder voor zich is. Verkeersborden zijn niet echt regels die men moet volgen, maar worden eerder gezien als voorstellen over hoe het zou kunnen. Voorrang van rechts kennen de Napolitanen ook niet. Degene die als eerste de voorrangsregels negeert, heeft voorrang. Vind je geen parkeerplaats, dan kan je gerust parkeren in het midden van de straat. Dat zijn maar enkele voorbeelden over hoe het er hier aan toe gaat. Je blijft dus maar beter te allen tijde alert in die Napolitaanse jungle.

  

Hoewel het drukke stadsleven hier mij enorm bevalt, heb ik toch af en toe ook eens nood aan wat rust. Waar beter kan je dat vinden, dan aan de prachtige baai van Napels met zicht op de Vesuvius, het heuvelachtige landschap en het heldere blauwe water van de Middellandse Zee. 

Zoals je merkt, is Napels een stad met veel mogelijkheden. Aan de ene kant heb je het drukke stadsleven van het historische centrum (dat volledig is opgenomen door UNESCO), maar aan de andere kant heb je ook de mogelijkheid om volledig tot rust te komen aan de prachtige Napolitaanse baai. 

 

Het is dus nog maar eens bewezen dat je niet altijd de media blindelings mag geloven. Na deze post zie ik dan ook geen enkele reden meer waarom jullie mij niet zouden kunnen komen bezoeken. ;-)

Here we are again in the pleasure that is each other’s company. In this post we will take a closer look to the stereotypes that are attributed to Naples: a dirty, dangerous, ugly and old city. But is this really true or does the media blows many things out of proportion which makes things look worse than they actually are?

The biggest setback for Naples was the waste management problem, which escalated in 2007. For months waste was not being collected, because the garbage men could no longer find authorized landfill sites. The problem has eventually been solved for the greater part, but nevertheless, you can still find some neighbourhoods in which there are piles of refuse present (especially in the outskirts of the city). One of the major causes of this problem is the infiltration of the local mafia, the Camorra, in the waste disposal services.

Although the many attempts of the authorities to weaken the Camorra, the local mafia is still very much alive in Naples. Nevertheless, as a tourist or as a student these issues seem far-flung events. Furthermore, you do not really have any business in those outskirts, I simply walked by (read: I was lost). The only thing that really bothers me are the cigarette ends that you can find e-ve-ry-where in the city.

Another imagine that the media have attributed to Naples is that it is one of the most dangerous places on earth. This problem is being tackled as well by the local authorities. In the most important parts of the city you can see quite some police officers patrolling, which makes you feel much safer. Of course you will not here me say that there is no crime present in the city, but according to me, Naples is as any other big city: a city with safe neighbourhoods and less safe neighbourhoods.

The only real imminent danger that you have to face on daily basis is the Italian traffic. Everywhere and on every single moment a Vespa or a car can pop up out of the narrow Italian streets. The traffic in Naples is a real jungle. Down here it is every man for himself. Traffic signs are not really rules that an Italian should abide by, but are seen as a propositions. The right of way is a stranger for Neapolitans. Those who are first to ignore the rules, have the right of way. If you do not find a parking lot, do not worry, you can just  park in the middle of the road. These are only a few examples of how the Neapolitan traffic jungle functions. So, it is advisable to stay alert at all time.

Although I really like the big-city life, I do need some rest now and then. What better place to relax than the beautiful Neapolitan gulf with a view of the Vesuvius, the beautiful hilly country  and the clear blue water of the Mediterranean.

 

As you can see, Naples is a city with a vast array of possibilities. On the one hand you have the crazy city life of the historic center, which has been enlisted by UNESCO, and on the other hand you have the possibility to find peace and relaxation at the beautiful bay of Naples.

Once again it has been proven that you should not always believe everything that the media tells us. After this post, I no longer see any reason why you guys should not come to pay me a visit. ;-)
